Shopify Customization
When Shopify stops where your process begins
Shopify handles the common case well — that is the point of it. The work starts at the edges: the pricing rule your business runs on, the fulfillment step missing from the admin, the report someone rebuilds by hand every Monday. Across ten storefronts, the constraint is rarely Shopify itself — it is assuming you must accept its defaults.
You may recognise some of this
- The theme fights back every time a new section or product template is needed
- A step your team performs daily has no equivalent anywhere in Shopify
- Apps were installed to cover the gap, and now they overlap and slow the store down
- Stock, pricing, or fulfillment is reconciled by hand between Shopify and another system
- The storefront is slow on mobile and conversion suffers for it
- Every small change waits on whoever originally built the theme
What the work covers
- Shopify theme architecture and customization in Liquid
- Custom tooling for workflows Shopify has no native answer for
- Integration between Shopify and the systems you already run
- Replacing overlapping paid apps with purpose-built functionality
- Storefront performance and technical SEO
- Handover so routine changes no longer need a developer
What changes afterwards
- The store follows your process, instead of your team working around the platform
- Fewer subscriptions each covering part of the same job
- Product and content changes that no longer wait on a developer
- Stock and order data that agree in one place

Common questions
Rarely. The question is only whether it belongs inside the theme or outside it. Storefront look and behavior go in the theme; approvals, reconciliation, and reporting work better as a separate tool, where a theme update cannot break them.
Often, yes. Apps are right when your need matches what they were built for. Once three of them each cover part of the job and none does it properly, custom functionality is cleaner: fewer moving parts, and nothing breaks when one updates on its own.
Usually the existing theme is workable. A rebuild earns its cost when the structure genuinely blocks the changes you need — not because the theme is old.
Staying is the default, and most of the time it is the right call. Moving off Shopify is worth discussing only when the platform actively resists the catalog, pricing, or fulfillment model your business depends on — a rarer situation than it is made out to be.
